The EnGender Study, nested within the Bridging Divides project, is a sub-study investigating the mental health and wellbeing of gender diverse – including transgender, non-binary, genderqueer, gender-fluid, gender non-conforming and gender-questioning - teenagers in London and Tokyo.

This sub-study aims to answer

the following research questions:

How does the mental health of gender diverse young people compare with their cisgender counterparts? Where gaps exist, do they change across social settings with (ostensibly) differing levels of LGBTQ+ acceptance and visibility?

Large white number two with black outline on a blue background.

Where mental health inequalities exist, what are the modifiable social and environmental factors that could close this gap? What are the positive features of the social environment that support gender diverse young people's wellbeing and help them to thrive?

A large, three-dimensional number three in a light blue and white color scheme.

What questions about gender identity should we ask in surveys to ensure better representation of gender-questioning young people in health research?

The EnGender Study will be conducted as a mixed-methods project, incorporating both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, and is scheduled to continue until early 2028. This page will be updated with findings from the study as they're released, but if you'd like to find out more about this study or about upcoming opportunities to get involved, please use the contact form on the Bridging Divides homepage.
